paper cuttings, collages, and paintings

Kathryn M. Meyers

My career as an art educator began following my graduation from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.  I taught elementary art in Pennsylvania and then in Massachusetts.  On the Cape I have taught elementary art in Provincetown, Truro, Wellfleet, Eastham and Orleans.  I was the art teacher at the Orleans Elementary School for 32 years, retiring in June 2011.  In 1997, I was honored to receive the Nauset Elementary Teacher of the Year Award.

I was introduced to the art of papercutting by a neighbor in Pennsylvania.  When my son Kurt was born in 1981, I began to do my own cuttings from my own designs.  My collage work is more recent and in pursuing it I have studied with Roberto Juarez and Jonathan Talbot.  There is a strong contrast in the two techniques going from precise cutting to random ripping!  I am working now on melding the two techniques into my own artwork.

I am a member of The Guild of American Papercutters.  I am also a member of the Artisans’ Guild of Cape Cod.  My artwork is shown at the Coastal Craft Gallery in Orleans, MA where I am a member of the gallery’s co-op.

“cutting is my play ~ I lose all time, silence surrounds me as I snip, snip away space to reveal new space.  Paper, scissors and a dot of glue yield timeless snips that record me, highs and lows, smiles and tears, birth, loss years…Everyone should have a quiet place, paper, scissors and a dot of glue.”
